New Zealand MPs speech on same-sex marriage "Be ye not afraid"

This is a speech given by Maurice Williamson, an MP from New Zealand, given last April I believe, in support of their same-sex marriage bill, which passed and will take effect August 19. I saw the video clip a while back and wanted to post it, but forgot. And in light of the hundreds of hateful comments I saw yesterday on an article on all the anti-gay legislation recently passed in Russia (lots of comments saying things like, the Ruskies are doing something right), I thought this was timely. Here's Mr. Williamson's wonderful, very funny, and very true speech.

For every Russia there is a New Zealand and I thank the Powers for that. This is a war that will be won a single battle at a time and it will be hard fought and hard won. I hope I still live when true freedom will exist for all people because gay rights are civil rights - nothing more and nothing less. Thanks for reposting this, it was well worth another listen...or two...or three.

Yes, and the battle is far from won, as all those comments indicated, but it will be eventually, I have no doubt.

That was hysterical and inspirational at once! Well said, sir. Well said.

hundreds of hateful comments I read yesterday on an article on all the anti-gay legislation recently passed in Russia (lots of comments saying things like, the Ruskies are doing something right),

I have learned to stay away from comment sections on news articles. Nothing good ever comes from reading them. (Some of the comments I have seen without even looking for it regarding the situation in Russia has been appalling enough.). Did you see The Daily Show's bit the other night about the random comment about Obama on the youtube kitten video? Seriously, WTF, people?

oops, posted before I was done typing!

It was just the right balance of humor (which is good for defusing ignorance and hate) and a soulful declaration of truth. As far as the comments, I know I should keep away from them. I swear there is a whole hoard of haters sitting there in their underwear writing these awful things on news articles. I did see the bit about the Obamahater on the kitten vid and yeah, truly.

I've seen this one before, but still like it! What a shame there weren't more MPs present to hear it :(

I think it's gotten a whole life of its own on youtube, so undoubtedly more heard it. What a beautiful statement.

There is that time when you are dull from the business of the day, but too tired to really do anything - especially get ready for bed, when flipping through the day's news and comments is about all you can muster. (Been there, done that!) It is nice when there are gems like this to justify the trolling.
This was a lot of fun to watch. DH and youngest enjoyed it as well.

Oh good. Glad to provide a good catch when trolling. I've listened to this speech probably a half dozen times now and found it uplifting, heartfelt, inspirational, and humorous. Brilliant! This is a man who is sincerely trying to do the right thing as well as be responsible to his constituents. I would vote for him if he were running here. (Unfortunately, we have quite a few Neanderthals around here.)
