Thanks to sian265   here is a link to some news about PJ's Hobbit movies.

The scuttlebutt is that Ian McKellan will return to play Gandalf (we knew that) and Hugo Weaving will reprise Elrond.  Cate Blanchett may return as Galadriel.  Apparently that's it for the returnees.  So no Orli playing a cameo Legolas.   Also, apparently they have no Bilbo picked out and are casting a wide net for all the characters.   The first script is completed, still working on the second.   The first movie probably won't be in theatres until 2012.  Hey wait, isn't that the year the earth is supposed to end?  Noooooo.

I hope they won't tackle the Silmarillion next or New Line will stretch the book to make 30 movies out of it - a hoard greater than Smaug's!

Also, Elrond (HW) and Galadriel (CB) would be ageing when they were supposed to be younger! Benjamin Button effect? :-)

Oh well, as long as there is money in it, I'm sure Hollywood will continue making them. I remember talk about PJ tackling the Silm. God, what a project. Maybe they would just do part of it.

And right, definitely a Benjamin Button effect. Ian will be looking older too. I wonder if makeup can erase 10 years?

Well, Ian at least is supposed to look old and hides behind a huge beard. The others will find it more difficult to disguise the wrinkles...

No, please, do not let them do the Silmarillion... I would rather it stays on the pages and in my imagination.

Oh dear god please no, no, no, NO! Not Hugo Weaving. No! Last time round he convinced people Elrond was middle aged and crotchety, god knows what impression he'll leave now. Yes, he's a good actor and brought gavitus to the role, but god that is not how Luthien's great-grandson should look.

</ ends rant>

Right, Elrond should be beautiful and ageless. Tough standard for mere mortal actors. I wonder how they'll handle his role. It's a bit part in the Hobbit, really.

**points up** What Kei said. Hugo Weaving is undoubtedly a gifted actor, but ageless? Neither young nor old? Beautiful? Um, no.

I agree. But I guess he's what we'll get. Let's just hope for a lovely Thranduil. lol.

Do we know for sure that Orli will not turn up to play Legolas' dad? That has been my biggest fear for years now. (I think he did a splendid Legolas, but he does so not fit my image of the Elven-king.)

Hiya Mal,
I guess we don't know anything for sure. They're saying he won't come back as Legs but I suppose that doesn't mean he couldn't be cast as Thranny. I have a feeling not though. I haven't seen anything about Orlando lately, it's like he's disappeared from the celebrity radar. Kind of sad when that happens to someone who's been the It boy for a while. I guess now it's Robert Patterson.

Hugo Weaving will reprise Elrond.

Heh. Now I will hold out the admittedly faint hope that GdT will cast Guy Pearce as Glorfindel in The Second Movie (is that still on?), and he and Mr. Weaving will break out into an Abba number during a meeting of the White Council.

Mr. Pearce had a role in The Road at the very end. He looked more than a little decrepit, but those are the effects of the end of civilization for you, I guess.

I have to admit I don't know who Guy Pearce is but the prospect of Hugo doing an Abba number causes me to grin. I did see Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Oooooh, Guy Pearce was "Felicia" (remember him?) and rounding out the cast was Terence Stamp as "Bernadette" in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.

I think an Abba number amongst the White Council would be boffo.

You know I could see bits of LOTR done quite well with Abba songs. It would be hysterical. Elrond and Cirdan advising Isildur at Sammath Naur, all with arms linked, doing the can can. "Knowing me, knowing you, (aha) there is nothing we can do . . . "
