Avatar. The previews look awesome and even if I can pretty much guess the story from the trailer, it's one that needs to be told yet again as witness some of the xenophobic comments under some of the youtube trailer clips. Such as this one by some mouth-breather: "if those freaking aliens win, then f**k this movie." I like the premise and would see it just for the incredible CGI effects.

Doesn't it though? I'm looking forward to it.

I do hope the alien win. After all it is there planet that gets invaded.:)

Agreed. Basic story looks like our sad real history with the American Indians. Ursula K. LeGuin wrote a very similar story years ago, but without the clones. Can't think of the title.

I can't wait to see it either - I already have my ticket for Saturday week :)

You're way ahead of me. LOL.

It looks great from the trailers. Predictable end, yes, unless they've put a few twists in the plot. We'll have to wait and see...

I hope the story isn't too predictable. Not good when a trailer basically gives away the plot. And I hope they've remembered that it doesn't matter how many fantastic special effects you have, if the story isn't good, the movie won't be.

I find this with trailers lately. They want to show off so desperately how brilliant the effects are, or how witty/beautiful/cool the actresses/actors are that they even spoil punchlines, and the plot is half revealed at the very least.

I can't go this weekend, so I'll wait to see what others say.

Fingers crossed. I hope you enjoy it!

Oooh - it looks very pretty! I'm a sucker for nice CGI :D Thanks for pointing it out.

P.S I think the LeGuin story you're thinking of is 'The Word For World Is Forest'.

The Word for World is Forest, yes, that's right. Been a long time since I read it. It was an early book of hers, I think. Somewhat of a polemic, but that story has been repeated many times in human history and the timing is right to tell it again.

I like the premise and would see it just for the incredible CGI effects.

Same here. The visuals in the trailers are just too lush to miss, and there looks to be enough sci-fi to keep me interested. I am sure the story will have an Important Message™. Oh, and Sigourney Weaver.

From the trailers it looks more like a mixture of Freedom Must Prevail™ plus an Even Baddies Can Have A Heart™, not forgetting the crucial One Man Can Make A Difference And Save The World (But Only If He Is A Hero)™

Elfscribe, I look forward to the full report, without spoilers! :-)

Will do. It starts Dec. 18 here. I'm going to try to go opening day, but if it's too crowded, will wait.

  • Freedom Must Prevail™

  • Even Baddies Can Have A Heart™

  • One Man Can Make A Difference And Save The World (But Only If He Is A Hero)™

  • Excellent! These are keepers. Or should I say Keepers®?

Not sure about the R inside the circle...

Anyway, sooo careless of me! I forgot the unmissable Star-cross'd Lovers Factor™, without which the movie would be an absolute flop, no matter how mucg CGI they have chucked at it....

Yep, those are the basics of many a movie. *g* Not to mention, Let's Root for the Underdog.

I've seen a few more of the short interviews with characters and it continues to look very promising. And yes, Sigourney Weaver. Love her.

Not sure where she is my favourite: Galaxy Quest, Wall-E or Copycat...

I fell in love with her for in The Year of Living Dangerously, and then of course as that bad-ass woman in Alien, Aliens and Ghost Busters. She was a hoot in Galaxy Quest (lol, I first typed she was a hot in GQ and that's true too.) I didn't know she was in Wall-E. I understand she's huge, six feet?

She was the computer gone mad (HAL-9000 upgraded model!). And yes, she must be very tall because somewhere I read an anecdote about Mel Gibson having to stand on a box in TYOLD.

This looks very interesting, and the graphics are quite incredible! I can't make up my mind if they're simply fantastic or a bit too much, tipping the film over the edge between 'believable SF/fantasy world' and 'pretty but too artificial to feel alive computer game world'. Anyway, I wasn't aware of this movie before but if it makes it to the sceens over here I will try to get to watch it! Thanks for posting this :)

I'll be able to let you know next week if it's any good or not. Hope all is well with you. I've been decidedly unproductive writing-wise.

I'm looking forward to your 'review' of it then :) Movie nights are scarce for me - I've only been to the theatre once or twice since the kids were born, so I'm not going to waste time on something I'm not sure I'd love to watch!
All's fine with me, my days are mostly filled with work, children and Christmas preparations but all three areas are free from stress at large, so I'm happy :)
It will be fun to see what will happen next in Númenor, when you decide to return there. Until next time, hugs!
