Tolkien estate, New Line Cinema Settle Lawsuit

Posted on 2009.09.09 at 10:23
I just saw this article on the AP about a lawsuit settlement that will now enable The Hobbit to go forward.  Gad, I wasn't aware there still was a lawsuit.  I'd thought it was between New Line and Peter Jackson. Is that another issue?  I fail to understand how if there was a contract between the Tolkien estate and New Line for a percentage of profits, that the Tolkien estate was forced to sue to get that contract honored? Is it because it was an earlier agreement with another studio and therefore ambiguous as to whether or not it applied to New Line?
Sheesh.  I guess the good news is we can expect the Hobbit movie sometime in the next few years.

I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with that either. Though Tolkien estate might have tried to get more profit percentage after the success of the previous films. That wouldn't be the first time. Or New Line trying to squirm out of something.

It really all comes down to money. Eventually we'll see the Hobbit. It's probably worth looking into to get the details though.

I figure I don't have all the facts here, but wouldn't be at all surprised if New Line was trying to take advantage of some loophole to weasel out of their commitment. Sad.

I had wondered why we weren't hearing anything about further work on the Hobbit. Wonder if they even have a script yet.
