A note about 'friending'

Posted on 2005.04.14 at 17:36
Current Mood: crankycranky

Dear Friends,

I don't mind if people friend me without asking, however, [elfscribe looks over her glasses in good schoolmarm manner] if you friended me because you are following my Persian Boy fic, and like it enough to want to know about updates, it really would be nice to get a comment on said fic once in a while, if only to say you read it. That seems to me to be the reason for friending an LJ, to be supportive of its author. Okay, that is all.

Speaking of which - next chapter might be another week. I'm just getting started on it now. Sorry but my life has been a total hectic disaster with no time for the pleasant things - like writing Bagoas and Oromedon in bed together.

Cheers,

~elfscribe

So now that you're stuck in Alexander...you going to write elves again? *grin*

Ah Larian - I just don't know. Got lots of plots on the back-burner but other RL pans bubbling up front. I should probably give up writing the slash altogether. Sigh. But thanks for that encouraging note. I do have a 1/1 Elladan/OC muse shouting to be given form. (The OC would be that stable boy in Dark to Dawn - *g*) Gad, am I hopeless. Was there something you had a yen for?

Yeah, RL does have a way of interferring with certain online activities.

Oh...Elladan and a stable boy, that sounds good. *nods*

No specific yen, I mean, besides the general..I love elves thing!!
dalogas at 2005-04-15 08:27 (UTC) (Link)

You know *my* yen

*Dalo pounds vigorously on the table*

Humans! Humans! Humans! Big muscular hairy chested men!

*He stops in mid-exclamation*

Wait a minute. That's my fantasy, not yours, isn't it? Sorry.

I must say, though, as much as I love your stable of elfsluts (typed with the greatest of affection), I am adoring your current muses as well.

May the chaos of your life soon give way to "Serenity" (coming soon to a theater near you!).

Thinking of you,
Dalo

Re: You know *my* yen

Hiya Dalo!
Ah hummm, yes, I know your penchants, very well my dear. When are we getting more of "your" particular yen -those lovely big, brawny men, Theodred and Boromir? So glad you also enjoy my elfsluts (and Persian courtesans). *g*
Thanks for the well wishes and back atchya.

I quite agree with you, dear. After all the hard work and the considerable stress that go into producing a well turned-out chapter, it's more than a little disheartening to meet with a deadly silence, followed by a demand of, 'when will there be more?' I do wonder how many people realise just how much effort goes into a long, thoroughly plotted and researched piece like this one.

I do, and I appreciate your work all the more for it.

Hang on in there..

C xx

I think most of us are writers and do know what it takes - and I also know there are valid reasons for not giving fb - nevertheless . . . it would be nice, if folks at least introduced themselves when they friend me and certainly a comment along the lines of 'I'm following your fic and like it enough to want to friend you,' would be only polite.
But oh well.
Thanks for your staunch support and friendship. You are wonderful!

Oh. Sorry. *looks at shoes*

I just friended you yesterday or the day before because I'm so squeaking new in this fandom (although an old hat in another one) that I needed to start somewhere. I'm just at the "learning names and catching up" stage; but believe me, I am a big supporter of author feedback.

Hiya geoviki,
Well, you weren't the only one - *g* Anyway, thanks for speaking up and very nice to meet you. And believe me, all is completely forgiven due to the absolute gorgeousness of your icon. [major yum]! Glad you're into the Alexander fandom - the only place I know of for that is maryrenaultfics. Some very good writers post on there. I'm often very impressed.
Welcome to my LJ.

Isn't he lovely? This is Freddie Mercury, sadly deceased, and former lead singer of Queen.

I just finished The Persian Boy last week, after shezan has been raving about it for months. (Thanks; she was absolutely right). I found your LJ from the LJ of another LJ, and since you are a writer, I wanted to add you before I lost the link. I've got a bunch of disorganized links that I shall have to sort out and read through this weekend, but I'm really excited at finding a new fandom. And it seems as though this one isn't utterly huge, like my main writing fandom.

In fact, about all I've managed to do is make two icons - one for me and one for shezan.

I'm glad to be here. Thanks for the welcome.

Ah yes, Freddie Mercury, I didn't recognize him. I'm a big Queen fan. Well, you're in the right place if you're fond of The Persian Boy. Me too, obviously. And yes, it's a nice cozy group.

Feedback?

well, alright, I love your stories. I have been a fan of your LOTR stuff for a couple of years, have read everything you have written and have you on my favorites list. I check in at least once a week to see if there is anything you, my wonderful writer, have posted. I always hestitate to give feedback because I don't really have anything constructive to say. I always love your work so that's a given but I don't know how to disect a good plot or even how to spell that well. I apologize for not leaving feedback all the time...I actually didn't realize how important it is to you, but I should have.
I think you are a great writer and probably a hot damn of a person and I promise to leave feedback for every author I read from today on. OK?

Re: Feedback?

Hello christiel,
Thanks, my dear. I wasn't referring to you - just to people who've friended me and haven't said even a word of introduction. And you did post a comment on my last chapter and that was great. That's all I'm talking about. No need to have great literary things to say about a fic either, although it's always nice if you can point out something you especially liked or how the story made you feel. But even just a quick note, 'I read your story and enjoyed it' is far better than nothing. Because from the author's point of view, silence feels like there's no one out there reading and therefore why should one put in the effort to post. I could just write for myself.

Here's an example. I post on Mirrormere where I can go and see how many people have read my stories. Last count 199 people had read Dark to Dawn and yet only one person bothered to put up fb. If I couldn't see how many people have read it, I'd conclude only one did. (Well, maybe that one person read it 199 times - LOL).

Also, I've read fics where I didn't fb either because I didn't care for it, or just had nothing to say about it, or because I didn't have time to write something meaningful but I must say that if I like it at all, I usually do write something to the author. It just seems a good supportive thing to do for our fellows - a small recompense for all the sweat and tears that go into a fic. If you're shy about posting on an LJ - which is public - you can always send a personal e-mail to an author. Works just as well and we will thank you immensely.
Thanks for your sweet and lovely comments.
And you're welcome to friend me if you wish.

Oh right about Elladan

Anything with Elladan would be much appreciated. Or the twins. Dusk to Dawn is one of my favorite stories of all time as is Stub Fee by Isabeau and anything by Stewardess (who unfortunately for me anyway, doesn't write LOTR anymore)

Re: Oh right about Elladan

Glad you like Elladan. I'll see what I can do about that bunny. And yes, Stud Fee was the fic that got me writing slash. LOL!
Thanks for comments.

*nod for what you said about both RL and feedback*

My new flat is being repaired for about two months, all kind of things happened more than I can imaging. I have to deal with and sovle them one by one, and keep up my work for try not delay any project.

Well, and my writing, I truely don't know when I could have time to start next chapter. For the feedback, Chinese reader are quieter (or quietest?). There are probably 20 to 30 people read my story, but usually only 2 or 3 would give me some words after they read.

Anyway, I love your writings and appreciate from my heart for these beautiful stories. Hope you won't give up totally.

It would be wonderful for more elves' stories. *g*

*hugs*

*feels really embarrassed* Hi, sorry I didn't introduce myself. I feel like a complete ass right now for that. I never meant to annoy or offend you. Your writing is amazing and I especially love your Oromedon/Bagoas stories. I do realize that A LOT of work goes into preparing and creating them, and I apologize for not commenting and offering my support. I will be sure to do so in the future! So yeah, I really do think you are a good writer and have a lovely talent for slash fics, which I so gleefully enjoy, and I apologize again.

Hi there xcasualty,
I appreciate your popping up and please don't be embarrassed. I didn't mean to be grumpy and I certainly don't mean people should have to comment all the time, especially if they are not moved to do so, but at least an intro - as you just did - is nice. Anyway, glad to meet you and welcome to my LJ. I hope you continue to enjoy the community here.
Cheers,

::checks date of original post and wonders if elfscribe receives emails every time someone posts in her LJ::

... otherwise, you'll never get this request. :o)

So, ugh, was wondering if I could friend you in order to read your stories. I've heard rare reviews and am most anxious to plunge into your fictional universe.

Thanks for considering.

Hello Anoriell,
Yes, fortunately I do get comments sent by e-mail or I'd miss a lot of 'em. Sure, happy for you to friend me and I'll friend back. I'm flattered you would like to read my fics. However, only the recent ones are on my LJ. All my LOTR ones are on:
http://www.ofelvesandmen.com/StoriesbyAuthor/E/Elfscribe.htm
They are also up on Mirrormere and Melethryn archives.
My LJ ones are accessible on my Memories section, once you friend me, you'll have access. (Nice to read on my LJ 'cause some are illustrated.)
Cheers,
