India reaffirms law banning gay sex

The Indian Supreme Court just overturned a ruling by a lower court decriminalizing gay sex. The way the law stands now anyone convicted of homosexual behavior in India can be sentenced up to life in prison. If you would like to sign a petition protesting this decision, you can go to this site: http://www.avaaz.org/en/indias_gay_outrage_loc/?bGzvreb&v=32698

For more info, here's an article from BBC news about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-25329065

Russia, and now India, and half the other countries in the world. It's a long haul to raise humanity from ages old prejudice about something that is quite commonplace in all cultures.

It seems like the world is going backwards. Signed.

There's a lot of reactionary stuff, that's for sure. However, I'm hopeful that it's actually a sign that positive change is on the horizon. There's always push-back with any kind of change in people's thinking about social issues like this. It's never easy dealing with discrimination in whatever form it takes. Women's rights is another one being mulled about in India. Hopefully, we'll all get to a better, more enlightened world.

I was just thinking exactly the same as Binky. We are moving backwards.

It does seem that way, however as I said to Binky, I think this is the normal way change occurs, not in one graceful glide, but in fits and starts and backward steps.

Just another reminder that we can never take progress for granted. India will have to decide now if it will do the right thing and repeal the original law. We can't count on the courts anymore, it would seem.

You're right, we can't. It's an uphill battle and every time rights are gained, there's some group out there ready to take them away. I'm hopeful for India coming to their senses. Interesting that when I read comments in an Indian newspaper, how much the arguments pro and con reflected so completely the same arguments you see in the U.S. A lot of it boils down to "we want equal rights" vs. "we fear change."
